St. Croix Island International Historic Site
Keywords: Marker, Site
Description: International historic site and marker. The marker is dedicated to the memory of Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635), geographer and pilot, and Sieur de Monts (1561-1630), and their crew, the first French explorers who landed on what they named St. Croix Island (also known as Dochet Island) in the St. Croix River, in June 1604. After a harsh winter, during which 35 men died of scurvy, they abandoned the site for Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia). Monuments contain the names of these first European explorers.
