Whitlock Mill Light Station
Keywords: Architecture, Light

Description: Built in 1909: light tower, lightkeeper's house, and bell building. Last lighthouse built in Maine. Named for Mr. Whitlock, who owned a lath mill at nearby Bog Brook, and who tended to the tower's 1892 predecessor--a red lantern hung on a tree!

The 12-foot diameter tower is constructed on a granite foundation of brick, painted white, is lined inside with white enamel brick, is octagonal, and rises 32 feet. Steel steps lead to the top of the tower. The octagonal light area at the top is surrounded outside by a narrow steel walkway with railing.

The bell house is a wood-shingled, wood frame, pyramid-shaped building. (The bell is no longer resident.)

Also built in 1909 as part of the station were a hip-roofed, shingled shed, and a brick oil house.

The 7-room lightkeeper's house is L-shaped, and faces the river. It has a projecting two-bay gambrel-roofed east end. The recessed portion of the ell is an enclosed porch. Windows are six-over-six, with a pair on each story. The house has three pedimented dormers.

The lightkeeper's house is now privately owned, but the light can be viewed from the roadside park. On National Register of Historic Places.
